Decluttering your closet is a big deal. If you’re not prepared, you could end up with a room full of clothes everywhere and a giant hot mess. Decluttering in general is something I’ve talked about before in my College & Minimalism: How They go Together and Why it’s Important post. Decluttering is your first step to minimalism. Even if you’re not looking to become a minimalist, it’s always good to go through your clothes once a year to clean out things that you don’t like, don’t fit, and generally won’t wear.
Clean Your Room
Okay, so hear me out on this one. Decluttering your closet can be a huge mission to accomplish. If you’re going to start pulling clothes out of your closet, dressers, containers, or whatever else, and your room is already a mess with things all over the place, you’re just going to add to the chaos.
- Make your bed
- Pick up everything that’s on the floor that shouldn’t be there
- Tidy up any free floating junk
- Vacuum/sweep/mop if necessary
You can’t paint on a messy canvas, and you can’t declutter with a messy room.
Grab 3 Containers
You’ll need three of some for of container, whether that be bags, boxes, bins, actual storage containers, whatever. For decluttering your closet, or really any place, having one box for keep, one for donations, and one for garbage.
Not everything you get rid of will be donation condition and it will just add more work at whatever donation center you choose. Anything with stains, holes, has been patched up over and over again. Basically, if you wouldn’t be caught dead in it, leave it for the dumpster.
Decide What Goes Where
This is probably the hardest part of the decluttering process. I know I always have issues when I go through my closet. What should I keep and what should I get rid of? Will I really wear that shirt again? Can I ever get back into that dress I’ve been saving for the past 2 years?
There’s a specific declutting method, the KonMari method, where you take each article of clothing and really think about it and whether or not it “sparks joy” in you. You can read more about that here, and if you want to get really crazy, buy the book.

Take a Break (or two)
Decluttering your closet for hours on end might seem like the most efficient way to go about things, but if you have a large closet, or have 50+ shoes, it might get tiring after the first hour.
It’s okay to take a break. Go grab some tea, have lunch, dance to the music you have playing to make the decluttering less boring. The general consensus is work for 52 minutes, take a break for 17. You can read up on that here.
