Christmas and the winter holidays are a time where you get to see family you haven’t seen in a while, gather around a table to have some great food, and indulge in the holiday spirit. But with the holidays comes the holiday stress!
Sometimes we just need some good self care during the holiday season. This post I’m going to be listing off my favorite self care ideas for during the Christmas season.
Self Care Ideas for During the Christmas Season
The holiday season is full of family, fun, and food. But it also can be very stressful, especially if you’re the one hosting everything and have to make sure everyone is settled in right.
Self care ideas for during the Christmas season aren’t that different from self care ideas not during the Christmas season. However, you can throw some holiday cheer in there to make it festive!
Get Some Good Sleep
The first self care idea for during the Christmas season is a good sleep. What you’re going to need to be able to deal with all the holiday fun and potential stress is a good night’s sleep. In order to function at your best capacity, you need to be well rested. Otherwise you’re not going to be able to deal with everything that’s thrown your way.
I highly suggest you invest in a weighted blanket if you haven’t. It’s been the best thing for my sleep in a very long time. If you want some good sleep and want to feel safe and secure while you’re sleeping, try out a weighted blanket. They’re becoming more popular now that I’ve even seen them at my local CVS.
If you don’t get a good night’s sleep then you’re going to be groggy, tired, and more prone to getting aggravated and stressed out. Even if you’re not hosting, no one likes a crabby pants because they didn’t get enough sleep.
If you can’t get a good night’s sleep or if you didn’t, I suggest stocking up on your preferred form of caffeine. I love me coffee so I would definitely drink an extra cup to keep me going.
Indulge Before the Crazy
The second self care idea for during the Christmas season is to indulge a little bit before the crazy starts.
Start your day with a hearty breakfast and a warm beverage, maybe even before everyone else is awake so you can enjoy the silence before the day starts going in full swing.
If indulgence means you have a Christmas cookie or two with breakfast, so be it!
Whatever it is you do to wind down, give yourself a chance to do that before everyone else is awake and ready to start celebrating.
Take a Shower
Step three of your self care ideas for during the Christmas season is to take a shower. It’s never going to be a Little Miss Short Stuff post without me telling you to take a shower.
This falls in line with both physical and mental health care. Taking a shower physically gets you clean but it also can be a way to be with yourself in a mental capacity.
Showers are great things!
They also help if your mental health isn’t doing that great. It’s why I suggest taking a shower if you’re having a bad day or if you haven’t taken care of yourself in a while.
Keeping up hygiene is an important part of self care.
If you can, take some breaks throughout your day. Taking breaks are a great way to encourage self care as they get you to step away from the stress for a short period of time to get yourself centered before you go back in head on.
For the self care ideas for during Christmas, here are a list of a few things you can do during your break to recharge:
- Take slow, deep breaths
- Have a warm beverage
- Go to an empty room and enjoy the silence
- Count to twenty, slowly
Doing some or all of these things can definitely help you calm yourself down before you go back out into the celebrations and chaos that is Christmas.
Make Sure You Eat
Sometimes when we’re focusing on others we forget to focus on ourselves. If you’re hosting and making sure everyone else is happy, it’s easy to have time fly by and realize that you haven’t eaten all day.
This is one of the more physical need self care tips. If you have a big family it’s possible that the process of opening presents can take a long time and it’s natural that you’d get a little hungry. But sometimes if you’re enjoying what you’re doing time can fly by and you won’t realize how long it’s been since you’ve last eaten.
Remember, self care isn’t all about spa days and skin care, it’s about making sure you’re fed, hydrated, and taking care of yourself.
Indulge in the Little Things
Next on the list of self care ideas for during Christmas is to indulge in the little things.
This can be something as easy as having a glass of wine with dinner (not too many!) or having that extra Christmas cookie later on.
Whatever it is that you want to indulge in, take the time to enjoy the little things.
This could also be moments.
Do you have a baby or toddler in your life? Enjoy the way their face lights up from all the presents they have. Kids are the best for moments like these.
Enjoy the time you have spent with family and friends. Enjoy the atmosphere of the holiday.
When it’s all said and done, company has gone home or gone to sleep, take some time for yourself.
Just like you did in the morning, use this time to unwind from everything that happened during the day. Relive some of the special moments, have another warm beverage if you want, light a candle, do a little night skin care routine, whatever it is that you do to wind down at the end of the day.
Giving yourself that time between all the excitement and going to sleep gives your body time to regulate and make it easier to fall asleep and hopefully, stay asleep.
